Amended Import Policy Allows Entry of Used Cars up to 2000 Kilometers: Islamabad

The government of Islamabad has granted permission for the importation of used cars with mileage up to 2000 kilometers. This amendment comes with a set of regulations aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the importation process while curbing illicit practices.

Under the amended policy, customs authorities are tasked with closely monitoring the entry of used cars, particularly those designated for commercial purposes. It has been emphasized that only vehicles manufactured within the current fiscal year will be eligible for import, excluding older models from consideration.

A senior official from the Ministry of Industries shed light on the decision, stating that it was prompted by inquiries regarding the importation of specific vehicles used for waste disposal and long-distance transport. Customs officials have clarified their stance on denying entry to vehicles with mileages ranging from 800 to 1500 kilometers, citing concerns over potential discrepancies in their origin and usage.

The federal cabinet, taking into account these concerns and aiming to streamline the importation process, has endorsed the allowance of used cars with up to 2000 kilometers on the odometer. However, it's reiterated that this permission strictly applies to vehicles meeting the specified criteria and not to all used cars.

Moreover, the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) recalled the stringent restrictions imposed on car imports during their previous tenure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability in the country's exchange reserves.

In light of these developments, State Bank of Pakistan has also relaxed payment regulations for approved dealers to facilitate smooth transactions. The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) reported a 30% increase in car sales in January compared to the previous year, indicating a positive trend in the automotive market.
