A 27-year-old Afghan man was fatally shot by police in the southern German city of Wangen after he attacked officers with a knife during an attempted arrest at his home, authorities said in a joint statement.
The man was being taken into custody to begin serving a prison sentence for assault when the situation escalated.
“In the course of the operation, the man suddenly pulled out a knife and attacked the officers without warning,” said local police and prosecutors.
“As a result of the attack, the police officers fired several shots.”
Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the suspect died at the scene. One police officer suffered multiple stab wounds and remains hospitalized in serious condition, though his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
An investigation has been launched into the police’s use of firearms, standard protocol in such cases in Germany.
Backdrop: Rising Tensions Over Immigration
The incident comes at a tense moment for German society. A series of violent attacks in recent years — some linked to migrants — has sparked a renewed debate over immigration and public safety.
The newly sworn-in Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who assumed office in May, has begun implementing stricter immigration policies, including measures to turn away most undocumented migrants at Germany’s borders.
Merz's administration has cited national security and public order concerns in defense of the crackdown.
Broader Context
Germany, home to millions of refugees and migrants, continues to grapple with balancing humanitarian responsibilities and domestic security. The latest attack is expected to intensify calls from conservative parties for even tighter immigration controls.
Further details on the investigation and identity of the suspect are expected in the coming days.
