WASHINGTON — Billionaire Elon Musk has departed from his role in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, concluding a controversial tenure marked by ambitious promises but limited results.
A White House official confirmed Musk’s “off-boarding will begin tonight,” with no formal farewell meeting between Musk and President Donald Trump. Sources reveal the decision was made at a senior staff level, signaling a quiet end to Musk’s government involvement.
Musk publicly thanked Trump on his social media platform X as his special government employee role wrapped up. However, his exit comes shortly after he criticized Trump’s flagship tax bill, calling it “too expensive” and suggesting it would undermine his work at the Department of Government Efficiency. These comments reportedly irritated top White House officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, prompting the administration to reassure Republican senators of Trump’s support for the legislation.
Initially, Musk was a prominent figure in Trump’s circle, known for his outspoken style and high-profile gestures — such as brandishing a red metallic chainsaw at the Conservative Political Action Conference to symbolize his mission to cut bureaucratic “red tape.” Yet his influence waned as tangible savings from his reforms failed to materialize.
Though Musk’s departure was swift and unceremonious, he remains close to the president. The billionaire’s bold, unconventional approach brought energy but also friction, ultimately leading to his quiet exit from the government efficiency initiative.
