A domestic dispute escalated into violence in Mayar Bazaar, Lower Dir, when a man, accompanied by his son, opened fire on his brother-in-law over a monetary disagreement. Two children, who happened to be nearby, were also injured in the crossfire.

According to police spokesperson Adnan Haider, the accused targeted the victim due to an ongoing financial conflict. The incident occurred in a crowded area, placing many innocent lives at risk.

“The children, identified as residents of Shekhanu Kaly, were injured while passing by,” Haider said. Both were promptly taken to Mayar Hospital for medical attention.

The district police confirmed in a press release that both suspects have been apprehended, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the relevant police station. “An investigation is underway to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly explored,” the release stated.

District Police Officer (DPO) of Lower Dir lauded the quick response of the police team, stating, “The Lower Dir Police remain vigilant to protect the lives and property of citizens.”

This incident adds to a growing list of domestic and intra-family violence cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Just earlier this month, a man in Charsadda reportedly killed his son and daughter-in-law over a dispute, while another case in Nowshera saw four family members shot dead in a similar domestic clash.

Experts point to deep-rooted patriarchal traditions, lack of mediation mechanisms, and weak enforcement of legal protections as major contributors to such violent escalations in family disputes.

Authorities continue to appeal for peaceful resolution of disagreements and stronger community awareness around the legal consequences of domestic violence and public endangerment.
