Rawalpindi: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench heard multiple appeals on Thursday related to the May 9 riots, with significant developments regarding top PTI leaders and workers. A two-member bench comprising Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan and Justice Amjad Rafique presided over the proceedings.
Govt Withdraws Appeals Against PTI Figures
The government withdrew its appeal against the decision to discharge Bushra Bibi, the wife of the former PTI chairman, from the May 9 cases. Additionally, the appeal to cancel Sheikh Rasheed’s bail was also withdrawn.
The Deputy Prosecutor General informed the court that the Supreme Court has directed all May 9 cases be concluded within four months, prompting a review of ongoing legal strategies.
Respite Sought in Several High-Profile Cases
The court proceedings also saw respite applications submitted by the government in several pending matters:
- PTI Chairman’s New Town case (physical remand appeal)
- Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s case
- Hammad Azhar’s case (appeal against the ATC Sargodha order)
In all these cases, the prosecution sought more time to prepare, and the court granted the requested extensions.
Mass Withdrawal of Bail Cancellation Requests
In a notable move, the government withdrew 39 applications seeking the cancellation of bail for PTI workers allegedly involved in the May 9 incidents, signaling a shift in approach or case prioritization.
