Greta Thunberg Ordered to Pay Fine for Climate Protests: Swedish Court

Greta Thunberg, the renowned climate activist and founder of the "Fridays for Future" movement, has been ordered by a Stockholm court to pay a fine of 6,000 Swedish crowns ($550, €512) for her participation in climate protests outside Sweden's Parliament in March.

Thunberg faced charges of civil disobedience for refusing to comply with police orders to leave the protests, arguing that urgent action on climate change is necessary. She maintained her stance during court proceedings, emphasizing the ongoing climate emergency and the need for immediate action to protect the planet.

In response to the court ruling, Thunberg expressed disappointment with the current legal framework, stating, "The current laws protect the extractive industries instead of protecting people and the planet."

During the March protests, Thunberg, 21, participated in a series of demonstrations, including blockades of the main entrance to the parliament building. Despite police intervention and her subsequent removal from the scene, Thunberg remained steadfast in her advocacy for climate action.

This is not the first time Thunberg has faced legal consequences for her activism. She has previously been fined twice by Swedish courts for civil disobedience at climate protests.

The "Fridays for Future" movement, inspired by Thunberg's solo protests outside the Swedish Parliament in 2018, has since gained global momentum, with millions of students around the world joining in to demand urgent measures to address climate change.
