India Submits Gandapur’s Statement to FATF, Seeks Pakistan’s Return to Grey List

The Indian government has submitted a controversial statement made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) as part of its campaign to portray Pakistan as a supporter of terrorism.

According to FATF officials, India presented CM Gandapur’s remarks in which he alleged that, “We arrest Taliban, but the institutions release them.” The Indian delegation reportedly described this as a “confession of systemic support” for militant groups operating in the region.

India has urged the global watchdog to reconsider Pakistan’s status and place it back on the grey list, claiming that Gandapur’s public comments reinforce long-standing allegations of state-level complicity in militant activities.

FATF officials stated that India labeled the statement as a "charge sheet" against Pakistan, asserting that it directly undermines the progress Pakistan claimed to have made in countering terror financing and anti-money laundering regulations.

It is important to note that Pakistan was removed from the FATF grey list in October 2022, after being listed since 2018 for strategic deficiencies in curbing terror financing and money laundering.

Since its removal, India has consistently lobbied for Pakistan’s re-listing, citing various domestic and international developments. Indian media has also amplified narratives around Pakistan’s alleged shortcomings in dealing with extremist groups.

The development comes at a time when internal political statements are being increasingly weaponized in international forums, raising concerns over how domestic remarks can be interpreted — or misinterpreted — on the global stage.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has yet to respond officially to this development, but diplomatic sources suggest the matter will be addressed with FATF directly, clarifying the context and intent of the KP Chief Minister’s remarks.
