Indian Authorities Arrest Four Over Alleged Trafficking of Citizens to Fight for Russian Army in Ukraine

Indian authorities have arrested four individuals suspected of involvement in trafficking Indian citizens to fight for the Russian army in Ukraine. The arrests come amidst growing concerns over the recruitment of foreign fighters by Moscow to bolster its forces in the ongoing conflict.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced the arrests late on Tuesday, stating that the individuals were part of an international network facilitating the recruitment of Indian soldiers for the conflict in Ukraine. Among those detained was an individual who had previously worked in Russia as a translator for the network.

The investigation, which has been ongoing for two months, revealed at least 35 instances of Indians being sent to Russia for military purposes. Indian recruits, who were promised lucrative salaries and Russian passports, reported being deceived about their roles and were subsequently trained for combat before being deployed to Ukraine.

India's Ministry of External Affairs had earlier expressed efforts to secure discharges for around 20 Indian nationals serving in the Russian army. The arrests highlight the challenges faced by Indian authorities in combating human trafficking and protecting citizens from being exploited in foreign conflicts.

Despite India's longstanding alliance with Russia, concerns over the welfare of Indian citizens and adherence to international norms have prompted scrutiny over the recruitment of soldiers for foreign military engagements.
