Indonesia’s Defence Minister Calls on PM Shehbaz, Seeks Enhanced Defence Partnership with Pakistan

Indonesia’s Defence Minister, Lt Gen (Retd) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Tuesday, expressing Jakarta’s keen interest in deepening bilateral defence ties and exploring collaboration in defence production.

During the meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, Gen Sjamsoeddin conveyed greetings from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing strategic and industrial cooperation with Pakistan. According to a statement issued by the Press Information Department (PID), both sides reaffirmed their shared interest in boosting defence collaboration and broader bilateral engagement.

Pakistan and Indonesia share long-standing ties rooted in cultural, religious, and historical connections. Their cooperation spans various sectors, including trade, education, healthcare, and now increasingly, defence and technology.

PM Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the Indonesian minister and reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to pursue joint ventures in defence and investment projects that are mutually beneficial. “Pakistan is committed to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia in economic, strategic, and defence sectors,” the prime minister noted.

The meeting also reviewed the ongoing initiatives under the Pakistan-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement. Both parties agreed to accelerate the implementation of key projects in line with mutual interests.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also recalled his productive meeting with President Prabowo Subianto during the Developing-8 Summit in Cairo last year and conveyed his warm wishes to the Indonesian leader.

Highlighting their shared diplomatic values, both countries underscored the importance of supporting one another on international forums and promoting “multifaceted bilateral cooperation” that serves the interests of both nations.

Earlier in June, Pakistan and Indonesia agreed to boost collaboration in vaccine production, the development of medical institutions, pharmaceutical projects, and human resource exchanges. These steps build upon longstanding efforts to broaden ties beyond defence into the domains of health, education, and commerce.

In a gesture of growing friendship, Indonesian Charge d’Affaires Rahmat Hindiarta had last year hosted Pakistani business leaders and their spouses at the Indonesian Embassy to promote bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

With both sides committing to deepening cooperation, today’s high-level meeting signals a renewed phase in the strategic partnership between Pakistan and Indonesia.
