Iran-US Nuclear Talks Continue Amid Rising Tensions, Execution of Alleged Mossad Spy

High-stakes negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding Tehran’s nuclear programme continue to make progress, though tensions persist due to recent political and military developments. The discussions, which began on April 12 and are mediated by Oman, are aimed at resolving long-standing issues over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The West, particularly the US, has long believed that the Iranian programme is designed to develop nuclear weapons, an accusation that Tehran has consistently denied.

The latest round of talks, the highest-level dialogue in years, is set to take place in Rome, as announced by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In addition to the US, Iran will also meet with representatives from the UK, France, and Germany—countries that were part of the 2015 nuclear deal. That deal, which called for the lifting of sanctions on Iran in exchange for limitations on its nuclear activities, collapsed after the United States withdrew in 2018 under President Donald Trump.

Despite progress in the talks, Iran has voiced frustration over recent threats from the European trio, warning that sanctions could be reimposed. Iran’s UN mission has called these threats and economic blackmail “unacceptable,” stating that genuine diplomacy cannot proceed under pressure.

Meanwhile, US President Trump, who returned to office in January, has reignited his "maximum pressure" sanctions campaign. This approach mirrors his first term, where he took a hardline stance against Iran. In March, Trump even sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging negotiations but also warning of possible military action if Tehran refuses to engage.

While diplomatic efforts continue, tensions in the region escalated with the execution of a man accused of espionage for Israel’s Mossad. Iran’s judiciary confirmed the hanging of Mohsen Langarneshin, a high-ranking spy implicated in the 2022 assassination of Revolutionary Guards colonel Sayyad Khodaei. Khodaei, a member of the Quds Force, was killed in a targeted attack in Tehran, which Israel later confirmed it was responsible for. Langarneshin's role in the assassination was reportedly linked to monitoring Khodaei's movements.

The execution of Langarneshin is the latest in a series of arrests and executions related to espionage accusations against those allegedly collaborating with Israel. In 2023, a man was executed for collaborating with Mossad, and four others were hanged the previous year for alleged ties to the Israeli spy agency.

As the nuclear talks proceed, the situation remains tense, with Iran's stance focused on the lifting of sanctions, while Western powers continue to press for stricter controls on Iran’s nuclear activities. The next few months will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can lead to a resolution or if tensions will further escalate.
