Islamabad Court Sends Journalist Asad Ali Toor to Jail on 14-Day Judicial Remand

Islamabad district and sessions court has ordered journalist Asad Ali Toor to jail for a 14-day judicial remand in connection with a case related to an online campaign against the judiciary. The case was initiated following a joint investigation into a social media campaign deemed malicious against the judiciary after the Supreme Court's decision to deprive the PTI of its iconic 'bat' symbol.

Earlier this year, a five-member joint investigation team was formed to probe the matter, leading to Toor's interrogation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on February 23. Subsequently, the journalist was arrested and remanded to FIA custody for five days.

Toor was booked under Sections 9, 10, and 24 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), which encompass the offences of glorification of an offence, cyber terrorism, and cyberstalking. The first information report (FIR) accused him of building a false narrative and launching a malicious campaign against civil servants, government officials, and state institutions.

The court's decision to send Toor to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand comes after rejecting the FIA's plea for a four-day extension in physical remand. Additionally, the appeal for dismissal from the case was disposed of, with Toor's lawyer contending that his client had been in FIA custody for 11 days and emphasizing his availability for further investigation after being discharged from the case. #AsadAliToor #Journalism #JudicialRemand
