Judicial Commission Approves New Chief Justices for Four High Courts

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the names for the permanent appointments of Chief Justices of the Peshawar, Balochistan, Sindh, and Islamabad High Courts.

A meeting of the commission, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi in his capacity as Chairman of the Judicial Commission, reviewed the top three senior judges from each high court to fill the vacant chief justice positions on a permanent basis.

According to official sources, Justice Atiq Shah has been approved as the new Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, while Justice Sarfaraz Dogar has been confirmed as the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court.

The commission also considered and approved names for the Chief Justices of the Sindh and Balochistan High Courts; however, their identities will be formally notified following official confirmation from the relevant authorities.

The appointments mark a significant reshuffle in the leadership of Pakistan’s judiciary and come at a time when high court benches are under increasing pressure to address case backlogs, maintain judicial independence, and ensure swift access to justice.

This is one of the key structural changes made under Chief Justice Yahya Afridi’s tenure, reflecting his ongoing focus on judicial consistency, elevation based on seniority, and strengthening institutional transparency.

Official notifications from the Ministry of Law and Justice regarding these appointments are expected soon.
