POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The National Assembly witnessed a fiery exchange on Tuesday between Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and PTI leader Ali Mohammad Khan, as tensions between the government and opposition spilled over into a bitter verbal confrontation.
Khawaja Asif, in his address to the Assembly, sharply criticized the PTI's actions during and after their time in power. He remarked on PTI's political struggles, particularly targeting their relationship with former army chief Gen. Bajwa, accusing the party of inconsistency in their narrative.
"The PTI's leader was locked in a digi (meeting) with Bajwa after leaving office," Asif said, drawing attention to the party's perceived shifting alliances. He went on to reference the events of May 9, when military installations were targeted during PTI protests, labeling it as an "insult" to the institution and describing the party's actions as hypocritical.
During his speech, Khawaja Asif also revisited a past cabinet decision to impose Article 6 on him, noting that Ali Mohammad Khan supported that move. "My leader was arrested along with his entire family," Asif said, accusing the PTI of playing political games while disregarding serious consequences.
In response to remarks made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Asif sarcastically commented that two days had passed since Gandapur's provocative speech, where he promised to bring the army, with "13 days left."
The session became particularly tense when PTI leaders Shandana Gulzar and Ali Mohammad Khan stood up in protest, making noise during Asif's address. Asif responded sharply, accusing them of reacting because he had "put his foot on their tail."
The Defense Minister also addressed Shandana Gulzar directly, stating, "I don’t want to touch your face because then you will say I am attacking a woman," a remark that drew an immediate response from Ali Mohammad Khan, who demanded Asif speak respectfully.
Khawaja Asif quickly fired back, saying, "I have learned the difference from you."
The clash highlights the deepening divide between the ruling coalition and the PTI, as verbal spats have become increasingly common in the political arena, reflecting the broader tensions gripping the country's leadership.
