KP Reserved Seats: ECP Issues Notification, Oath-Taking Ordered

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially notified the names of successful candidates on reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, following the Supreme Court’s recent directive.

In a formal letter addressed to the Secretary of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the ECP has instructed the provincial legislature to complete arrangements for the oath-taking ceremony without delay. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Speaker of the Assembly, stressing the urgency of the matter.

The move marks a significant development in restoring parliamentary functionality in KP, as the reserved seats had remained vacant following post-election legal disputes and were only recently cleared after the apex court's verdict.

“The oath-taking should not be delayed under any circumstances,” the ECP stated. “This will ensure that the legislative process continues uninterrupted.”

Background

The delay in notifying reserved seat members had triggered a constitutional crisis in KP, with several political parties—including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)—demanding their representation be confirmed. The Supreme Court’s ruling compelled the ECP to finalize and notify the candidates for these reserved seats.

Accordingly, women and non-Muslim candidates nominated by their respective political parties have now been formally returned as members of the provincial legislature.

Reserved Seat Candidates (PML-N List)

Separately, the ECP also released the list of candidates for two reserved seats in the National Assembly allocated to PML-N from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The list includes:

·       Samar Bilour

·       Saeeda Jamshed

·       Nargis Ali

·       Syeda Sonia Hussain

Their nomination papers will undergo scrutiny on July 14, with successful candidates to be notified soon afterward.

This step is part of the broader electoral process to restore full representation in assemblies, especially from constituencies or seats held up by legal or procedural delays.
