A tragic incident occurred aboard the Sukkur Express on Saturday, when pilgrims sitting on the roof of the moving train were electrocuted after the flags they were carrying came into contact with high-voltage overhead electric wires.
According to SSP Azhar Mughal, the train was traveling from Jacobabad to Rohri when the accident took place. At least one mourner died, and 11 others sustained serious injuries.
“The flags of the pilgrims sitting on the roof of the Sukkur Express touched the electric wires. One person died on the spot, and 11 others were injured—some due to electrocution, others from falling off the train,” said SSP Mughal.
The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where several remain in critical condition. Authorities are continuing to monitor their status and provide medical assistance.
Traveling on rooftops, especially during Muharram processions and pilgrimages, is unfortunately a recurring issue on certain railway routes, often due to overcrowding or lack of space inside the train compartments.
Railway and police officials have urged the public to avoid such dangerous practices and emphasized the need for strict enforcement of safety measures during religious events.
This incident has once again raised serious concerns about passenger safety, particularly during high-traffic religious occasions, and has prompted calls for greater regulation and public awareness.
An investigation into the accident is currently underway.
