PM Shehbaz Approves Amendments to PECA Law for Social Media Regulation

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given his approval to amend the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, marking a significant step in the federal government's efforts to regulate social media through legislation. Sources reveal that the proposed PECA Amendment Bill 2024 includes provisions for the establishment of a Digital Rights Protection Authority, which will operate under the Ministry of Information Technology's jurisdiction.

The bill, once approved by the cabinet, will be presented in Parliament. It has been recommended by the cabinet's Legal Reforms Committee, emphasizing the need for responsible internet usage and the protection of digital rights.

The proposed Digital Rights Protection Authority is envisioned to advise the government on digital rights matters, collaborate with social media platforms, regulate online content, and investigate violations of the new PECA law. Furthermore, it will have the authority to demand information from individuals and witnesses involved in online activities.

Officials stress that the primary objective of the bill is to safeguard citizens' privacy from the risks associated with social media, emphasizing its role in creating a secure digital environment while upholding fundamental rights.

It's worth noting that this legislative move is distinct from the recent establishment of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority by the Ministry of Information Technology.
