A police constable was shot dead by unidentified attackers in the Mandan police station jurisdiction of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district on Tuesday morning, as the region continues to face security threats targeting law enforcement.

According to Khanzala Quraishi, spokesperson for the Bannu Regional Police Officer, the victim, Constable Khanzeb, was on his way to duty on a motorcycle when he was ambushed near the Asghar fuel station.

“Unidentified assailants intercepted and opened intense fire on him, killing him on the spot,” Quraishi told Dawn.com. The policeman’s body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Bannu. A large police contingent quickly arrived at the crime scene.

Later in the day, District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas Kulachi visited the site of the attack and issued strict orders for a swift and thorough investigation. “We will not rest until the elements involved in the incident are brought to justice,” the DPO affirmed, stating that he was personally overseeing the operation alongside other officers.

Spike in Attacks on Police in Bannu

This attack follows a recent surge in militant violence against police in the region. Just last week, three personnel of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) embraced martyrdom and two others were injured during an encounter with terrorists in Speena Tangi Chashmi.

A day earlier, a separate clash in the Kot Adil area had left one terrorist dead, while two policemen, including a senior officer, sustained injuries.

The recent wave of violence has raised alarms about militant resurgence in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Bannu district, which has seen repeated attacks on law enforcement and CTD personnel.

Security has been heightened across the district, and operations are ongoing to apprehend those behind Tuesday’s fatal shooting.
