POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and barrister Salman Akram Raja has raised serious concerns over the premature passage of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) budget and criticized the Adiala Jail authorities for obstructing access to PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail following a rare meeting with the imprisoned PTI leader, Raja voiced frustration over what he described as deliberate attempts to restrict communication and legal consultations.
“Since March 25, I’ve only had two meetings with the PTI founder,” Raja said. “This seems like a well-thought-out strategy to isolate him. The jail authorities are deliberately creating obstacles, and even court orders are being ignored.”
The PTI leader accused the judiciary of hesitating to implement its own orders, lamenting that even in cases where he is the official legal representative of Imran Khan, he is being denied access.
Raja also criticized the KP government’s decision to pass the provincial budget on June 23, arguing that it should have waited for clear instructions from the party founder, which were expected imminently.
“There was no compulsion to pass the budget on the 23rd. The political committee had agreed that we had time until June 30 for further consultation,” he said, adding, “The way the KP Assembly rushed through the budget process raises serious questions.”
Raja further explained that there were no instructions from Imran Khan to topple the KP government, and the PTI leadership had wanted more internal dialogue before finalizing the budget strategy.
He warned that had the process been delayed strategically, it might have led the federal government to invoke a financial emergency, shifting the political dynamic significantly.
Commenting on the Lahore High Court’s rejection of Imran Khan’s bail in May 9-related cases, Raja expressed regret and announced that they would challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court. “We will continue to confront this system and expose its contradictions,” he stated.
The press conference underscored the growing internal debate within PTI ranks over key decisions, and added fuel to the already tense political atmosphere around the party’s jailed founder.
