Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has praised the transformative potential of Starlink services for Pakistan’s digital future during an official visit to SpaceX headquarters in Los Angeles. His visit, along with a delegation, was part of ongoing efforts to bolster Pakistan-US cooperation in technology and innovation.
According to a report by the Associated Press of Pakistan, Ambassador Sheikh emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in bridging Pakistan’s digital divide. He called Starlink’s satellite internet infrastructure a significant step toward expanding broadband access to remote and underserved areas of the country.
Starlink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, operates a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed internet across the globe. Last month, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced that Starlink services are expected to be operational in Pakistan by the end of 2025. The minister also revealed that a provisional license has been granted to Starlink to operate in the country.
During the visit, senior Starlink officials — including the vice president of global business operations and the director of global business development — welcomed the Pakistani delegation and provided a comprehensive tour of SpaceX’s headquarters. Discussions focused on expanding national connectivity and enabling digital access in underprivileged and rural regions.
Ambassador Sheikh reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fostering innovation through international collaborations. “This engagement opens the door to tangible cooperation in space technology, digital infrastructure, and commercial innovation,” he said.
The visit forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen public-private tech sector partnerships between Pakistan and the United States. Notably, Chinese company Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology has also applied for a satellite internet license in Pakistan, highlighting the government’s aim to promote competition in the digital services sector.
With Starlink’s entry into the Pakistani market, stakeholders anticipate significant improvements in internet speed, coverage, and accessibility, particularly for communities long left behind in the digital revolution.
