The spillways of Tarbela Dam have been opened following continuous rainfall in the northern regions, raising the water level significantly, authorities confirmed on Friday.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the release of water through the spillways could raise the flow in the Indus River to 260,000 to 270,000 cusecs, increasing the risk of flooding in downstream areas.
Residents Urged to Stay Alert
An alert has been issued for populations living along the banks of the Indus River, particularly in Nowshera, Swabi, and Haripur districts. Local residents have been instructed to avoid watercourses, canals, and rivers, and to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure safety.
The NDMA spokesperson warned that the enhanced water flow could pose a danger to settlements located near the river, especially during recreational or tourist activities. Citizens visiting picnic spots near the riverbanks are advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities.
Agencies on High Alert
Relevant departments including the district administrations, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and other emergency response agencies have been directed to remain on high alert. Measures are being put in place to minimize risk and ensure timely response in case of flooding.
The public is also advised to monitor official updates, follow instructions issued by local authorities, and report any emergency situations to rescue services.
