POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

US President Donald Trump has once again heaped praise on Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, crediting him for averting a potential nuclear war between Pakistan and India.
Speaking at a press conference following the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump recalled the recent backchannel diplomacy that led to a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed South Asian rivals.
“A ceasefire was reached between Pakistan and India. Both countries have nuclear weapons — it could’ve been a disaster. Pakistan made several phone calls to India and said: ‘Do business, not war,’” Trump told reporters.
“Asim Munir is a Great Person”
Trump, who has previously referred to Asim Munir as a key figure in stabilizing the region, reiterated his admiration, saying:
“I met Army Chief Asim Munir. He is a great person. His personality is impressive,” the US President said. “He helped stop a war.”
The US President claimed that Israel, with help from key allies, had contributed to preventing wars not only in the Middle East but also in Africa and South Asia, referencing conflicts in Iran, Rwanda, Congo, and the India–Pakistan standoff.
White House Meeting with Munir
Trump had hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House a few days earlier. The meeting reportedly included lunch and extensive discussions on regional security, nuclear de-escalation, and economic ties.
“I had the honor of meeting Field Marshal Asim Munir today,” Trump had told the media after the meeting. “I invited him to thank him for stopping the war with India and to discuss the situation in Iran.”
The US President also noted that a trade agreement is under negotiation with Pakistan, and expressed optimism about enhancing bilateral economic cooperation.
Averting a Nuclear Conflict
The acknowledgment of Pakistan's role in de-escalating tensions with India comes amid growing global concern over rising instability in South Asia. The two countries have had a history of border clashes and were on the brink of war after incidents in Kashmir in previous years.
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s role has been viewed positively by the international community, with Washington increasingly recognizing his diplomatic and military engagement as key to regional stability.
