Trump: US Nears Trade Deal with India, EU Talks Progressing

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled significant progress in trade negotiations with India, suggesting that a deal is near. Speaking in an interview aired on Real America’s Voice on Wednesday, Trump also hinted at the possibility of reaching a deal with the European Union (EU) but remained cautious on the prospects of a trade agreement with Canada.

“We’re very close to India, and we could possibly make a deal with the EU,” Trump stated.

The remarks come amid intensifying negotiations ahead of the August 1 deadline, when new duties are scheduled to apply to most U.S. imports. Trump’s administration has pushed for renegotiating trade terms to reduce the U.S. trade deficit, targeting major economies for what he has long called "unfair" trade practices.

Trump took a swipe at the EU’s previous stance in trade talks, saying:

“The European Union has been brutal, and now they're being very nice. They want to make a deal, and it'll be a lot different than the deal we've had for years.”

While Trump appeared optimistic about India and the EU, he was less certain about Canada.

“Too soon to say,” he said when asked if a Canada deal was within reach.

This aligns with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier statement that no acceptable deal for Canadian workers is yet on the table. Canada, like the EU, is reportedly preparing countermeasures if negotiations fail.

Trump’s New Tariff Threat

In a bold move, Trump also mentioned the possibility of blanket tariffs—around 10% to 15%—on imports from smaller countries, signaling a broad escalation in his protectionist trade approach.

Ongoing Negotiations

  • EU Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic is currently in Washington to continue tariff discussions.
  • An Indian trade delegation arrived earlier this week to finalize a potential bilateral deal.

With the August 1 tariff deadline looming, the outcome of these high-stakes negotiations could reshape the U.S. trade landscape and impact global markets.
