US Highlights Shared Interest with Pakistan in Combating Terrorism, Urges Protection for Afghan Refugees

The United States reiterated its commitment to collaborating with Pakistan to address the critical threat of terrorism in the region, emphasizing shared interests in combating terrorist groups. At the State Department's daily news briefing, spokesperson Matthew Miller underscored the need for continued cooperation between the two countries in addressing security challenges.

Commenting on recent statements by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) regarding Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan's (TTP) involvement in terrorist attacks, Miller expressed condolences for the loss of life and injuries sustained in these attacks. Recognizing Pakistan's significant sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, the United States reaffirmed its support for efforts to enhance security and stability in the region.

In addition to terrorism concerns, Miller highlighted the plight of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, urging Islamabad not to repatriate them due to the dire situation in Afghanistan. Emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, he urged Afghanistan's neighbors, including Pakistan, to respect non-return advisories to ensure the safety and well-being of refugees.

Regarding speculation about the potential release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Miller refrained from taking a position, stating that such matters are for the government of Pakistan to decide. However, he welcomed diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, including an upcoming visit by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to Islamabad.

While expressing support for diplomatic engagement between partners, Miller indicated that he did not have further details about the visit. The United States continues to advocate for constructive dialogue and cooperation among regional stakeholders to address shared challenges and promote peace and stability in the region.
