Pakistan’s Olympic javelin sensation, Arshad Nadeem, delivered a golden performance at the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea, on Saturday, throwing a massive 86.40 meters to win the men’s javelin final—marking Pakistan’s first gold in the tournament in five decades.
The 28-year-old champion faced a slow start with initial throws of 75.64m and 76.80m, but he soared to the top with a 85.57m third attempt, followed by consistent efforts of 83.99m and 83.44m. In his sixth and final throw, Nadeem unleashed a powerful 86.40m, sealing gold in emphatic style as the crowd roared and waved Pakistani flags while “Dil Dil Pakistan” played in the background.
India’s Sachin Yadav claimed silver with an 85.16m personal best, while Japan’s Yuta Sakiyama secured bronze with 83.75m, also a personal best. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga, who had earlier led the field, missed the podium with an 83.27m throw.
Other top finishers included India’s Yash Vir Singh (82.57m), China’s Hu Haoran (80.93m), and Sri Lanka’s Sumedha Jagath Ranasinghe (79.81m). Pakistan’s Muhammad Yasir placed eighth with a 75.39m throw.
Coach Salman Butt praised Nadeem’s performance, calling it an impressive start to the season, especially considering the tight schedule between the heats and finals. “With a day’s rest, he could have done even better,” Butt added.
Nadeem had entered the final after an 86.34m throw in the heats—a sign of what was to come. Competing internationally for the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he set the Olympic record at 92.97m, Nadeem narrowly missed breaking the championship record of 86.72m.
The athlete, known for his humble celebrations, fell into prostration upon winning. His journey from a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games to a silver at the 2023 World Championships now sees him eyeing the only major title he has yet to claim: gold at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in September.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both lauded Nadeem’s performance. “He has once again brought glory to Pakistan,” the president stated, while the PM called his achievement a source of national pride and inspiration for youth.
The sports community also joined in the celebrations, with Shadab Khan, Babar Azam, and Shaheen Afridi praising Nadeem’s brilliance on social media.
While Nadeem earned Pakistan’s only medal at the championship, other athletes also gave their best. Sprinter Tameem Khan finished 17th in the Women’s 100m heats, while Shajar Abbas and Abdul Mueed competed in the Men’s 400m event, finishing 12th and 27th respectively.
With this win, Arshad Nadeem has once again proven himself a global javelin force, igniting hopes for more triumphs ahead.
