A gunfight broke out near the Saddar police station in Bannu when two unidentified men opened fire on police personnel during a routine patrol. According to Bannu Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan, Station House Officer (SHO) Waseem Sajjad and his team were on their regular patrol when the attack occurred.
In the ensuing exchange of fire, the police successfully neutralized one of the attackers, killing him on the spot. The second attacker was injured but managed to flee the scene. Authorities have launched a manhunt to capture the escaped assailant.
SHO Waseem Sajjad and Constable Hayatullah were both injured in the attack. Thankfully, both officers were swiftly transferred to the hospital, and the RPO confirmed that their injuries are not life-threatening. In a show of support, both RPO Sajjad Khan and Bannu DPO Saleem Abbas Kalachi visited the hospital to check on the officers' condition.
During the investigation, modern weapons, Kalashnikovs, hand grenades, and ammunition were recovered from the deceased attacker’s possession. The body of the slain assailant has been transferred to the hospital for identification.
This incident follows last week's military operation in Bannu where security forces killed six terrorists and injured four others, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.
The local authorities have vowed to intensify their efforts to maintain law and order and protect citizens from such attacks.
