A major disruption in Karachi's water supply occurred late Monday night after a cable fault at K-Electric’s Pipri grid station resulted in a complete shutdown of the Pipri pumping station, officials confirmed.
According to a K-Electric spokesperson, the fault occurred at approximately 10:15 PM, leading to a full suspension of operations at the pumping facility. As of now, the fault remains unresolved, causing a significant disruption in the water distribution network.
The Pipri pumping station supplies 145 million gallons of water daily (MGD) to Karachi and is a crucial node in the city’s water infrastructure.
🚱 Areas Affected by Shutdown
A spokesperson for the Karachi Water Corporation said the shutdown is affecting multiple densely populated and industrial zones, including:
· Landhi
· Korangi
· Shah Faisal Colony
· Bin Qasim
· Defence Housing Authority (DHA)
The Water Corporation further stated that they are in constant contact with K-Electric authorities to expedite restoration efforts.
“Efforts are underway to resolve the technical fault and restore the electricity supply to resume pumping operations,” the K-Electric spokesperson added.
⚠️ Urgent Need for Backup Solutions
The incident highlights the fragility of Karachi’s water and power infrastructure and the urgent need for contingency planning and improved coordination between utilities.
Until repairs are completed, residents in affected areas may face acute water shortages, further straining daily life in the already water-stressed metropolis.
