Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa Addresses Controversy Over Judges Committee Changes

In a strongly worded letter dated Thursday, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa provided a detailed explanation to Justice Mansoor Ali Shah regarding the recent removal of Justice Munib Akhtar from the judges committee. This letter comes in response to Justice Shah’s earlier correspondence, which had criticized the Chief Justice for allegedly conducting a “one-man show” in judicial matters.

Justice Isa's letter firmly addressed the points raised by Justice Shah, stating, “Your tiresome cliches do not controvert facts.” He elaborated on the reasons behind Justice Akhtar’s removal, citing his opposition to the Practice and Procedure Act and his choice to take extended vacations, which contrasted sharply with the commitments of other court members.

Moreover, CJP Isa accused Justice Akhtar of disrespecting senior judges and displaying rudeness towards fellow judges. He criticized Justice Akhtar for adjourning cases unnecessarily and granting injunctive relief improperly.

In a bid to clarify his leadership approach, Justice Isa highlighted his achievements during his tenure. He stated that he had dismantled the “cliques” that previous Chief Justices used to wield influence over the court, promoting merit-based decisions instead. He took pride in restoring the court to its full operational capacity and ensuring that general elections were conducted, thereby reinstating democracy in the country.

Expressing concern over Justice Shah's statement regarding a “constitutional crisis” in the country, CJP Isa warned that such remarks could potentially destabilize the nation. He urged Justice Shah to reflect on the situation objectively and return to his judicial responsibilities.

The exchange between the two justices underscores ongoing tensions within the judiciary, raising questions about governance and decorum in Pakistan’s legal system.
