POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, officially joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Monday, reaffirming his confidence in the party’s vision for the region.
The announcement came after Tanveer Ilyas held a meeting with Faryal Talpur, President of the PPP Women’s Wing and a key party leader, at Zardari House. The meeting was also attended by Governor Punjab Baligh Ur Rehman, Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Ziaul Najjar, and other senior party figures.
According to the Zardari House spokesperson, along with Tanveer Ilyas, political figures Ali Shan Soni and Ahmed Saghir also announced their decision to join the PPP during the meeting.
In his remarks, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas praised the PPP's decades-long commitment to the Kashmir cause, calling their efforts “unparalleled” in supporting the political, economic, and diplomatic rights of Kashmiris.
Faryal Talpur welcomed the new entrants to the party, emphasizing the PPP’s long-standing connection with the people of Azad Kashmir. She added that if PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari becomes Prime Minister, Azad Kashmir would witness unprecedented development and renewed hope for the liberation of occupied Kashmir from Indian control.
“The PPP has always stood with the people of Kashmir. With Bilawal at the helm, the dream of independence for occupied Kashmir will move closer to reality,” Talpur stated.
The joining of Tanveer Ilyas — a high-profile political figure and former AJK premier — is seen as a strategic gain for the PPP in strengthening its political footprint in Azad Kashmir, especially ahead of any future electoral battles.
Political observers believe the move signals growing dissatisfaction among certain political circles in AJK with the existing leadership and a shifting alignment in favor of parties with a national presence and historic ties to the Kashmir issue.
