India Creating Flood Crisis in Pakistan by Controlling River Water: Musadiq Malik

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Musadiq Malik, has accused India of using river water as a geopolitical weapon against Pakistan, warning that any move to construct storage dams would be interpreted as an act of war.

In an interview with British media, the minister stated that India is creating artificial flood situations in Pakistan’s rivers — at times by withholding water during critical agricultural periods, and at other times by suddenly releasing it to flood low-lying areas.

“India currently does not have storage dams, but if it begins building them, we will consider it an act of war,” Malik said, highlighting the potential environmental and strategic ramifications for Pakistan.

He further disclosed that India had deliberately withheld water during the sowing season last month, severely impacting Pakistan’s crop cultivation and threatening the country's food security.

“This tactic is aimed at damaging our agriculture and undermining national stability through climate-related pressures,” the minister added.

The remarks come amid escalating tensions over the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and growing concerns about regional water security, with climate change adding further strain on already fragile relations.
