Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ session, reaffirming Pakistan's unwavering commitment to its “iron-clad” relationship with China.

Dar, representing Pakistan in the joint call of SCO member states’ foreign ministers, met President Xi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dar said he was “delighted” to meet the Chinese president and conveyed warm greetings on behalf of Pakistan’s leadership and people.

“As iron-clad brothers and all-weather strategic cooperative partners, we remain committed to deepening Pak-China enduring friendship and advancing shared regional goals,” Dar stated.

The meeting took place ahead of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ gathering in Tianjin, which serves as a precursor to the annual SCO summit scheduled for this autumn in China. The 10-nation Eurasian group includes China, Russia, Pakistan, India, Iran, and several Central Asian countries.

Welcoming the SCO foreign ministers, President Xi underlined the importance of regional cooperation under the SCO framework, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

After the high-level interaction, Dar joined his counterparts from member states including India’s S. Jaishankar, Russia’s Sergei Lavrov, and Iran’s Abbas Araghchi at the ministerial session in Tianjin.

Dar also held sideline meetings with foreign ministers from several SCO states, including Iran, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. “Always good to exchange views for strengthening regional understanding and cooperation in such a challenging time,” he shared on social media.

Separate bilateral meetings were also held with Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu and Kyrgyzstan’s Zheenbek Moldokanovic. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

According to the Foreign Office, Dar will continue holding bilateral meetings with various counterparts during his visit to China. His engagements are aimed at reinforcing Pakistan’s regional diplomacy, promoting strategic connectivity, and reaffirming commitment to shared economic and security goals under the SCO framework.

Dar was received in Beijing by Chinese Ambassador Yu Hong, senior officials from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil ur Rehman Hashmi.

The SCO continues to be a key multilateral platform for Pakistan’s foreign policy, offering a space to engage with key regional players amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
