POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar is set to undertake an official visit to the United Kingdom from August 17 to 19, the Foreign Office announced on Saturday. The visit is part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its bilateral relationship with the UK through enhanced political, economic and community engagement.
According to the FO, the Deputy Prime Minister will hold a series of high-level meetings in London, including talks with the UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Pakistan, Hamish Falconer. He will also attend a breakfast meeting with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
The two countries have been engaged in an Enhanced Strategic Dialogue since 2011, which covers a wide spectrum of cooperation including trade, investment, cultural collaboration, security and education. Officials in Islamabad believe the upcoming visit will further contribute to broadening the scope of the dialogue and advancing common objectives on regional and global challenges.
As part of his engagements, Ishaq Dar will also formally inaugurate the Punjab Land Record Authority’s digital documentation project, piloted at the Pakistan High Commission in London. The initiative is aimed at assisting overseas Pakistanis in resolving land documentation issues remotely, without the need to travel to Pakistan.
In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister is expected to interact with British parliamentarians, Kashmiri leaders and members of the British-Pakistani community during the three-day visit.
Earlier this month, during high-level talks in Rawalpindi, Pakistan and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in various areas, with particular focus on defence and strategic dialogue.
Last month, the UK government launched a new e-visa system for Pakistani students and professionals, streamlining its border and immigration process. The announcement came shortly after both countries signed the Trade Dialogue Mechanism Agreement and established the UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council to institutionalise bilateral economic cooperation.
The Foreign Office noted that the visit reflects Pakistan’s resolve to strengthen longstanding ties with the United Kingdom and engage closely with the Pakistani diaspora in the UK.
