Islamabad Court Jails 12 PTI Workers Over Nov 26 Protest

The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad has delivered its first verdict under the Public Order and Public Assembly (PAPO) Act 2024, convicting 12 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in connection with the November 26 protest.

According to court proceedings, the workers were charged for organizing and participating in a rally without official permission. The cases were registered at Ramna and Tarnol police stations under the provisions of the PAPO Act, which governs rules for public demonstrations and assemblies.

Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Shahzad Gondal issued the verdict in two cases related to the Ramna police station, while Judicial Magistrate Mureed Abbas gave the ruling in the Tarnol police station case. Out of the 13 individuals tried, 12 were sentenced to six months imprisonment, and one worker was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

The court maintained that the accused violated public order laws by holding a protest without acquiring prior permission from authorities, thereby disrupting public peace and safety.

This ruling marks the first conviction under the newly enacted Public Assembly Act, and it sets a precedent for future legal proceedings involving political demonstrations.

Legal experts suggest this decision may spark further political debate regarding the implementation and interpretation of the PAPO Act, especially in politically sensitive cases.

The PTI legal team is expected to challenge the verdict in higher courts.
