In response to escalating tensions with India following the deadly April 22 attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government on Thursday announced the installation of emergency alert sirens across 29 districts to ensure civilian safety in case of any aerial threats, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
The move comes amid heightened security concerns after a devastating assault in Pahalgam claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region since 2000. India has alleged cross-border involvement, a claim Pakistan has rejected outright, calling instead for an impartial international investigation.
A statement from the KP Directorate of Civil Defence confirmed that the sirens would be deployed in high-risk zones to maximise alert coverage and provide real-time warnings to residents. Citizens have been advised to seek immediate shelter upon hearing sirens and prioritize the safety of vulnerable groups including children, women, and the elderly.
The 29 districts where sirens will be installed include:
Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan, Kohat, Swat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Malakand, Lower Dir, Lower Chitral, Kurram, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bajaur, Haripur, Mansehra, Upper Dir, Shangla, Buner, Lakki Marwat, Khyber, North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Battagram, Tank, and Orakzai.
Authorities have directed district administrations to ensure timely installation and regular maintenance of the siren systems. The public has also been warned against spreading rumours or misusing the alerts, with strict instructions to treat sirens seriously to safeguard lives and property.
“The general public has been strictly discouraged from engaging in spreading rumours and mocking or misusing the sirens,” the Civil Defence statement noted. “The measure intends to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens in times of potential conflict.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reassured the public on Wednesday that while Pakistan will not initiate any conflict with India, any provocation would be met with a strong and appropriate response.
The rising tensions have prompted concern from global powers and regional allies, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Turkiye, and Qatar, all of whom have urged both nations to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions.
