Lahore High Court Rejects Imran Khan’s Bail in Eight May 9 Violence Cases

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s bail applications in eight separate cases related to the violent protests and attacks that erupted across the country on May 9, 2023.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi had earlier reserved its decision after hearing arguments on the petitions filed by Khan seeking bail in connection with multiple FIRs registered following the May 9 riots.

According to Geo News, the reserved verdict was delivered yesterday, resulting in the dismissal of all eight bail pleas.

The cases against the former prime minister include serious allegations such as the arson and vandalism of key state properties, including the burning of Jinnah House (the residence of the Lahore Corps Commander) and Askari Tower, as well as other instances of mob violence and public property damage.

May 9 remains a turning point in Pakistan’s political history, when protests broke out across major cities following the arrest of Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The protests quickly spiraled into violent clashes, with widespread damage to military and civilian installations. Authorities responded by launching a broad crackdown on PTI leaders, workers, and supporters.

Imran Khan has denied any involvement in the violence and maintains that the cases are politically motivated to silence him and dismantle his party. However, law enforcement agencies have pressed ahead with investigations, citing video evidence and eyewitness accounts.

The LHC’s ruling marks another legal setback for the incarcerated PTI chief, who remains entangled in dozens of criminal and political cases across various courts in Pakistan.

Further legal proceedings and appeals are expected as Khan’s legal team considers its options following the bail denial.
