Military Courts Case: Hearing Adjourned Till May 5

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of the case challenging the trial of civilians in military courts till May 5, after the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) sought time to conclude arguments.

During today’s proceedings, the AGP told the constitutional bench that everyone’s focus is currently on India's recent actions, noting that a scheduled departure related to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had been canceled.

Addressing the main issue, the AGP stated that the question of granting the right to appeal to those facing military trials falls within the domain of policy decisions. "I can place the reports before the court only after obtaining instructions on this matter," he explained.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, a member of the constitutional bench, observed that while Parliament has the authority to make policy decisions, the court's role is limited to examining the case within its legal scope.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar inquired about the time needed to complete arguments. The AGP responded that he would conclude his submissions within 45 minutes.

Subsequently, the bench adjourned the case hearing till May 5, granting time for the AGP to finalize his arguments.

The case remains a pivotal constitutional matter as it addresses the legality and scope of military trials for civilians, an issue that has sparked widespread legal and political debate across the country.
