At least nine people were killed and dozens injured as relentless monsoon rains battered Punjab on Wednesday and Thursday, with Lahore recording 140mm of rainfall, the highest in the province, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The torrential rains triggered widespread urban flooding, roof and wall collapses, and accidents in various districts, severely disrupting daily life and highlighting the vulnerabilities of infrastructure in high-risk areas.
“In the past 24 hours, four people died and 40 were injured in rain and wind-related incidents across the province,” said Rescue 1122 Punjab Spokesperson Farooq Ahmed.
🔹 Tragic Incidents Reported Across Punjab
· Lahore:
o A 50-year-old man died in Nishtar Colony when a roof collapsed.
o A TR girder fell on Ashiana Road, killing one.
o Multiple roof collapses in Ichhra’s Ganj Bakhsh area injured two.
o Two motorcycle accidents due to slippery roads resulted in injuries.
· Sheikhupura:
o In Mirza Virkaan village, two children aged two and five died in a roof collapse.
o Another child was injured on Jandiala Road in a wall collapse.
· Vehari:
o Four people injured in separate incidents of roof and wall collapses.
· Dera Ghazi Khan:
o Three injured when a roof caved in.
· Sargodha (Bhakkar District):
o A wall collapse in Mankera injured one person.
· Attock:
o A family of six trapped in floodwaters was rescued by emergency teams; all sustained injuries.
· Okara:
o Three people were injured in roof collapses in Chak 5/4L and Chak 6/4L.
· Sialkot, Rajanpur, Sahiwal, Narang Mandi & Others:
o Multiple injuries reported due to roof collapses, wall collapses, and falling structures.
🔹 PDMA Warns of Continued Rainfall Until July 13
In its daily situation report, the PDMA said that Lahore experienced seven continuous hours of rain early Thursday, leading the rainfall chart with 140mm recorded. Other rainfall stats include:
· Sialkot: 77mm
· Gujranwala: 67mm
· Chakwal: 65mm
· Jhelum: 64mm
· Faisalabad: 51mm
· Attock: 45mm
· Rawalpindi & Kasur: 23mm each
· Murree: 1mm
“The second monsoon spell is likely to continue until July 13,” said PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia, urging citizens to stay indoors during thunderstorms.
He directed district administrations to remain on high alert, particularly in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, DG Khan, Sahiwal, Sargodha and Mianwali divisions, where heavy rains are forecast in the next 24 hours.
🔹 Precautionary Measures Advised
· Citizens are urged to avoid low-lying flood-prone areas.
· Emergency teams, including Rescue 1122, are on high alert.
· Residents near vulnerable structures and riverbanks should move to safer locations.
· Flood relief camps are being set up to accommodate displaced families.
