Tensions escalated outside Adiala Jail today, as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers clashed with police at the Gorakhpur checkpoint, demanding to meet Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, who are currently imprisoned in the jail.
The confrontation resulted in the torture of PTI Chief Whip, Amir Dogar, who was beaten with a baton by the police and had his clothes torn. Dogar condemned the police brutality, claiming it was an act of hooliganism, and emphasized the violation of his rights as a member of the National Assembly.
Despite the tense standoff, the two sisters of PTI founder Imran Khan, Uzma Khanum and Noreen Khanum, were eventually allowed to meet their brother. Aleema Khan, the elder sister, was not permitted to meet him, and other key PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, and Aamir Dogar, were also denied access.
Earlier, police had set up checkpoints on roads leading to the jail, heavily restricting movement. Bushra Bibi’s daughter Mubashara Sheikh and Mehr-un-Nissa, along with other PTI leaders, were stopped at the Gorakhpur Naka. PTI workers, frustrated by the restrictions, blocked the main highway, creating traffic jams and a confrontation with the police.
Barrister Salman Safdar, Imran Khan’s lawyer, criticized the government’s refusal to allow legal counsel to meet their client, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming hearings and the need for legal consultation with Imran Khan. He expressed dismay over the increasing barriers and the denial of legal rights to PTI leaders and their legal representatives.
As the situation intensified, PTI workers continued to push forward, eventually reaching a barrier just before the jail. Police reinforcements arrived, leading to more clashes, and workers were arrested. Opposition leaders Omar Ayub and Asad Qaiser joined the protest, further escalating the situation.
In the end, after intense negotiations, Imran Khan's sisters were given special permission to meet him, while Aleema Khan was denied access as the meeting time had expired.
Noreen Khanum confirmed to reporters that Imran Khan’s health is fine, despite the challenges faced by the PTI leadership outside the jail.
