SC Forms Bench to Hear Contempt Case Against Imran Khan

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled a hearing in the contempt of court case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan, with proceedings set to begin tomorrow.

A five-member constitutional bench headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan has been constituted to hear the federal government’s contempt petition, which was originally filed on May 25, 2022. The petition alleges that Imran Khan violated court orders during the PTI’s long march in 2022 by directing protesters to reach D-Chowk, despite prior assurances to restrict the gathering to a designated area.

The federal government maintains that the deviation from the agreed route led to public disorder, traffic disruptions, and a serious breach of trust with the judiciary. The move prompted the government to file a contempt plea, asserting that Imran Khan’s actions undermined the authority of the court.

The formation of the constitutional bench signals the Supreme Court's intent to revisit the issue with fresh urgency, especially amid ongoing political tensions and a renewed focus on accountability and rule of law.

Legal analysts believe this case could have significant political implications, particularly as Imran Khan remains incarcerated and at the center of multiple legal challenges.

The hearing comes at a time when political temperatures are shifting, with signs of potential reconciliation between the ruling coalition and PTI. However, court proceedings such as this could complicate any dialogue process.
