Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman on Monday presented a Rs 5,335 billion budget for the fiscal year 2025–26, with the government proudly announcing no new taxes for the second consecutive year.
The budget session of the Punjab Assembly saw Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and her cabinet in attendance, while opposition lawmakers staged a protest in front of the speaker’s desk, disrupting the proceedings.
According to the Punjab government’s official documents, a 10% increase has been approved in the salaries of government employees, and a 5% hike in pensions for retired public servants.
Key sectoral allocations include:
· Rs 811.8 billion for education
· Rs 630.5 billion for health
· Rs 411 billion for local government
· Rs 129.5 billion for agriculture
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz hailed the budget, calling it a moment of “great joy” that for the second year in a row, no new taxes have been imposed. “We are prioritizing public welfare and development without burdening the people,” she stated.
Echoing the CM’s remarks, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb clarified that no tax rates will be increased, and the budget includes a development outlay of Rs 1,240 billion. She also emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency, announcing that a detailed annual report of every rupee spent would be presented.
Aurangzeb also noted that the budget features a clear roadmap to broaden Punjab’s tax net without raising the existing tax burden. “Our focus is on growth, inclusion, and accountability,” she said.
Despite the opposition’s protest during the session, the government described the budget as “people-friendly” and development-oriented, with a strategic focus on expanding public services and strengthening institutional infrastructure across the province.
