Senior Journalist Khalil Jibran Assassinated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sparks Outrage and Demands for Justice

a senior journalist associated with Khyber News and former president of the Landi Kotal Press Club, was tragically assassinated by unidentified gunmen near his residence in Landi Kotal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The incident occurred when Jibran was returning home with his friend Sajjad Advocate, and their vehicle developed a fault near Mazreena area.

 

According to District Police Officer Salim Abbas, assailants on a motorcycle ambushed Jibran's car, forcibly removed him, and opened fire, fatally wounding him on the spot. Sajjad Advocate, who was also present, sustained injuries during the attack. The perpetrators fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

 

Following the incident, Khalil Jibran's body was transported to a hospital in Landi Kotal for post-mortem examination. An FIR has been registered against unknown suspects, with terrorism provisions included, based on the complaint filed by Sajjad Advocate, an eyewitness to the brutal assassination.

 

The news of Jibran's killing has sparked widespread outrage and protests among journalists, political figures, and social activists in the region. A protest was held on the Khyber-Pak-Afghan highway demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the journalist's murder.

 

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the assassination of Khalil Jibran, directing KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and relevant authorities to swiftly apprehend the culprits. The PM expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and assured stringent measures to ensure the safety of journalists across Pakistan.

 

Earlier last month, another journalist, Nasrullah Gadani, was targeted in a similar motorcycle attack in Sindh, highlighting the escalating threats faced by journalists in the country. The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) has vehemently condemned the continuous targeting of journalists and called for immediate action to safeguard press freedom and security.

 

Khalil Jibran's funeral was attended by a multitude of mourners, reflecting the profound impact of his loss on the journalistic community and society at large. As investigations continue into this heinous crime, there is a pressing demand for justice to be served swiftly and comprehensively.
