Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday announced a landmark Rs100 million grant to support the upcoming Asia Cup Wheelchair Cricket Tournament, affirming the provincial government’s strong commitment to inclusive sports.
In a statement from the Chief Minister’s House, it was confirmed that CM Murad also pledged an annual Rs15 million grant for the Pakistan Wheelchair Cricket Council (PWCC), the country’s official body for wheelchair cricket, as well as a dedicated customised minibus for the national wheelchair team.
PWCC, a founding member of the International Council of Wheelchair Cricket (ICWC), is instrumental in promoting sporting and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities across Pakistan. The council has led Pakistan’s team to back-to-back Asian championship titles.
The announcement came during a special meeting at the CM House with the two-time Asian Champion Pakistan Wheelchair Cricket Team. The meeting was attended by Education Minister Sardar Shah, Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Sports Minister Muhammad Bux Mahar, CM’s Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, and DEPD Secretary Tauha Farooqi.
Representing the PWCC, President Rukhsana Rajput and team captain Mohammad Zeeshan briefed the chief minister on upcoming international events. They shared that a Pakistan vs Afghanistan Wheelchair Cricket Series is scheduled for September 2025 in Karachi, followed by the prestigious Wheelchair Cricket Asia Cup 2025 to be hosted across Karachi and Hyderabad in October.
Participating nations are expected to include Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the UAE, and potentially India.
In response, CM Murad directed Sports Minister Mahar to immediately begin renovation work at Hyderabad’s Niaz Stadium in preparation for the Asia Cup. “We are committed to ensuring the Asia Cup is held in a grand and dignified manner. Our wheelchair cricket team has made the nation proud, and we must provide them with the support they deserve,” the chief minister stated.
The meeting reinforced the Sindh government’s growing focus on inclusive development, especially for individuals with disabilities. The back-to-back victories by the wheelchair cricket team have elevated them as symbols of courage, skill, and national pride.
This initiative follows CM Murad’s ongoing efforts to champion inclusivity. In December, he called upon the private sector and civil society to partner with the government in creating empowering environments for persons with disabilities. In June last year, he inaugurated a vocational training centre and promised continued support in providing necessary facilities and tools.
With the 2025 Asia Cup on the horizon, Pakistan’s wheelchair cricket team is set to shine once again — backed by strong government support and growing public admiration.
