Sindh on High Alert Despite Normalcy in Karachi Amid Border Tensions

KARACHI: Daily life in Karachi and across Sindh continued unaffected on Wednesday despite recent Indian missile attacks in Azad Kashmir and Punjab, but the provincial authorities wasted no time in activating contingency plans to tackle any emergency situation.

Educational institutions remained open and intermediate examinations were conducted as scheduled throughout the province. However, emergency protocols were set in motion behind the scenes, with full coordination among rescue services, the health department, and law enforcement agencies.

Retired Brigadier Wajid Sibghatullah Mahar, Director General of Rescue-1122 Sindh, confirmed that the Sindh Emergency Rescue Service was on high alert. “Our teams are fully prepared with manpower, equipment, and coordination protocols to handle any emergency effectively,” he told Dawn. The comprehensive emergency plan has been shared with all relevant district administrations to ensure swift action when needed.

In parallel, the Sindh Health Department declared an emergency across all public healthcare facilities. A communique issued by the Director General of Health announced that all leaves for medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, were cancelled. Health units were ordered to maintain close liaison with Rescue-1122, district administration, and law enforcement bodies.

Ambulances have been fully integrated into the Rescue-1122 operations network to respond rapidly to any medical emergencies.

Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon also placed the entire provincial police force on high alert. Officers were directed to increase surveillance in bazaars, markets, public areas, and around key installations. “The armed forces are alert at the borders, and the Sindh police are fully prepared to counter internal threats,” stated the IG.

Meanwhile, Karachi police chief Javed Alam Odho chaired a high-level meeting to evaluate the local situation. He ordered the city police to remain on standby at their headquarters and cancelled all leaves for city personnel. Police were instructed to intensify monitoring of sensitive areas and ensure a visible presence to maintain public confidence.

Though life in Sindh remains calm, authorities are taking no chances amid the evolving regional tensions.
