Supreme Judicial Council Dismisses 19 Complaints Against Judges, Approves Reform Measures

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Saturday reviewed 24 pending complaints against judges of the superior judiciary and unanimously decided to dismiss 19 of them. The remaining five complaints were deferred for further consideration.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, was attended by senior puisne judge Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, and Sindh High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Junaid Ghaffar.

The SJC convened this session to address longstanding concerns about the backlog and transparency of complaints under Article 209 of the Constitution, which governs the accountability of judges.

According to an official press release, the council examined all 24 complaints thoroughly before reaching its unanimous decision. “Nineteen complaints were unanimously decided to be filed, while five others were deferred for the time being,” the statement read.

In a move to strengthen the internal processes of the SJC, the council also approved the draft of the SJC Secretariat Service Rules, 2025. However, further review and legal scrutiny are required for the 2005 Procedure of Enquiry and the proposed amendments to the Code of Conduct.

Justice Munib Akhtar has been appointed head of a committee tasked with proposing the necessary amendments to the judges' Code of Conduct, a step aimed at enhancing transparency and restoring public confidence in the judiciary.

This meeting follows a previous session held in February, during which the SJC reviewed 46 complaints against constitutional office-holders, disposing of 40, seeking comments on five, and requesting further information in one case.

The proactive steps taken by the SJC under CJP Afridi’s leadership indicate a renewed focus on accountability and procedural clarity in Pakistan’s judiciary.
