Trump Warns Tariffs on BRICS, Says No Exemptions — Not Even India

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared his intent to impose a 10 percent tariff on all BRICS nations, including India, if re-elected, vowing to protect the U.S. dollar and American economic dominance from what he called an “anti-America alliance.”

In a fiery statement released on Thursday, Trump asserted that “No one, including India, will be exempted” from the new tariffs, which he said were necessary to counter BRICS’ efforts to “harm America and weaken the dollar.”

“If anyone wants to challenge the dollar, we will not allow it,” Trump said.

Targeting the BRICS Bloc

BRICS — comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — has recently gained momentum as a non-Western economic alliance, with a growing number of countries seeking membership. Many of these nations have voiced support for trading in local currencies and reducing reliance on the U.S. dollar, a move that Washington views as a direct threat to its global financial influence.

Trump, in his remarks, accused the BRICS bloc of being "established to harm the U.S." and pledged to hit back with economic penalties, should he return to office.

India Also in Crosshairs

The statement marks a notable shift in tone toward India, which has traditionally enjoyed a strategic partnership with the United States, particularly under recent Republican administrations. Trump's assertion that no exemptions would be made for India signals a tougher trade posture across the board.

A New Trade War Looming?

Analysts say Trump’s threat may signal a revival of protectionist trade policies and America First economic doctrine if he secures a second term in 2024. The proposed tariffs could have sweeping impacts on global trade, especially as BRICS expands its membership and economic coordination.

Trump’s comments have already sparked global concern among BRICS member states and could further strain Washington’s relations with the emerging economic bloc.
