Turkey has officially welcomed the recently brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel, expressing cautious optimism and urging both sides to uphold the agreement.
In a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ankara said:
“We are pleased that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire. It is imperative that both countries respect the truce announced by the United States.”
The ministry emphasized the importance of diplomacy at this critical juncture:
“Both countries should keep the dialogue and diplomatic channels open.”
The ceasefire, mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump, came after 12 days of escalating military conflict between Iran and Israel, which raised fears of a broader regional war. While the truce went into effect earlier this week, violations from both sides have already been reported, prompting calls from world leaders—including Turkey—for restraint.
Turkey, a key regional power and NATO member, has maintained a complex relationship with both Iran and Israel, often acting as a mediator in broader Middle East tensions. The Turkish government has repeatedly called for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts, particularly those threatening regional stability and the security of its borders.
The Turkish statement comes amid mounting international pressure on both Tehran and Tel Aviv to avoid further escalation. Reports of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military installations and Iranian missile threats have continued to cast doubt over the durability of the ceasefire.
The Foreign Ministry concluded by reiterating Turkey’s readiness to support efforts for long-term peace and stability in the region.
