Two Missing After Boat Sinks in Indus River Near Kohat; Seven Rescued

At least two people remain missing after a boat carrying passengers sank in the Indus River near Khushalgarh, Kohat, on Wednesday, according to Rescue 1122 officials. The incident adds to a troubling pattern of boat accidents in the region in recent years.

A spokesperson for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122, Bilal Ahmad Faizi, confirmed that the boat capsized in the Khushalgarh area of the Indus River. "Seven passengers were rescued with the help of local divers," Faizi said. "A search operation is underway to locate the two individuals still missing."

Rescue teams from Kohat, Nowshera, and Karak districts are participating in the operation, which is being led by Kohat District Emergency Officer Arif Khattak. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the missing persons.

This tragic event is not isolated. Earlier in May, four individuals — including two siblings — drowned in two separate incidents in the Indus River in Attock. In a similar incident last year in April, eight people drowned when a boat capsized near Kund Park in Nowshera district.

These recurring accidents have raised serious concerns about water safety, lack of regulation, and the urgent need for life jackets and other safety measures for river transport in the region.

Rescue 1122 has urged the public to exercise extreme caution when travelling by boat, especially during high water seasons. They also emphasized the need for proper training and safety gear to prevent further loss of life.

The search operation continues, and officials hope to locate the missing passengers soon.
