Two teenagers tragically drowned on Monday while bathing in the Nendhyar River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Battagram district, Rescue 1122 confirmed.
According to rescue official Aziz Khan, the victims were identified as 16-year-old Hafiz Usman and 14-year-old Ayan. “They were bathing in the river when they drowned and died on the spot,” he told Dawn.com. The Rescue 1122 medical team retrieved the bodies and shifted them to the District Headquarters Hospital in Battagram, where doctors confirmed their deaths.
Initially, there were fears that a third child might also have drowned, prompting an extended rescue operation. However, after inquiries from local residents, officials determined that only two children were involved. District Emergency Officer Kashif Khattak then ordered an end to the search operation.
This incident adds to a growing number of drowning cases across Pakistan, many of which occur during the summer and monsoon seasons. Experts and rescue officials attribute these tragedies to factors like strong river currents, lack of swimming skills, poor public awareness, and insufficient safety measures along water bodies.
Just a day prior, Rescue 1122 had retrieved the body of a young girl who drowned alongside her father and brother in the Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal. Two other girls also drowned in the Indus River in Torghar district on Sunday. Meanwhile, a boat accident in Kalam’s Shahi Bagh Lake last week resulted in the deaths of two women and two children, with search efforts still underway for another missing child.
These recurring incidents highlight the urgent need for improved water safety education, enforcement of safety regulations at tourist and river sites, and better emergency response preparedness to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.
