US State Department Stresses Safety of All Prisoners in Pakistan, Including Imran Khan

The US State Department reiterated the significance of safeguarding the safety and security of all prisoners in Pakistan, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

 

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted a meeting between US Ambassador Donald Blome and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), including opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan, where a range of issues concerning the bilateral relationship between the US and Pakistan, including economic support, were discussed.

 

Regarding discussions on the rights and charges against Mr Khan, Miller reiterated the US stance on political neutrality, emphasizing the importance of upholding basic human rights while maintaining impartiality towards political parties.

 

Miller also addressed reports of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's warning to Pakistan regarding the safety of imprisoned former premier Imran Khan, affirming the US commitment to human rights. He stressed the entitlement of every prisoner to basic human rights and protection under the law.

 

The State Department's statement underscores the global concern for the safety and well-being of all individuals in custody, highlighting the fundamental principle of upholding human rights regardless of political affiliation.
