NORTH WAZIRISTAN: Pakistani security forces have killed 17 terrorists during a sanitisation operation in Hassan Khel, near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The operation comes a day after 54 terrorists were neutralised while attempting to infiltrate the border — marking the highest-ever number of terrorists killed in a single engagement throughout Pakistan's ongoing campaign against militancy.
In a statement released on Monday, the ISPR said a "deliberate sanitisation operation" was carried out to eliminate any remaining threats in the area. “During the conduct of the operation, seventeen more khawarij, who were operating at the behest of their Indian masters, were hunted down and successfully neutralised,” the statement read. The term "khawarij" is used by the state to refer to terrorists.
A significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was also recovered from the slain militants. With these latest developments, the number of terrorists killed in the three-day anti-infiltration operation has risen to 71.
The ISPR reiterated the unwavering resolve of Pakistan's security forces to protect the nation's frontiers and maintain peace, stability, and progress.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces for their bravery and dedication. In separate statements, they paid tribute to the troops and reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country.
“The successful operations by our security forces against terrorists are commendable," President Zardari stated, vowing to continue security operations until the complete elimination of terrorism.
Prime Minister Sharif also lauded the efforts, noting, “The killing of 71 Khawarij terrorists during the operations over the past three days clearly shows that our law enforcement agencies are fully determined and vigilant in their mission to eliminate terrorism."
He further emphasized that Pakistan will continue to thwart the "nefarious designs of the enemies of humanity" and that the fight against terrorism will persist until complete success is achieved.
Pakistan has seen a rise in terrorist activities, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the end of a ceasefire by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in November 2022. March 2025 witnessed an alarming spike in militant violence, with over 100 attacks reported — the highest since November 2014, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
The Global Terrorism Index 2025 ranks Pakistan as the second most affected country, with a 45% increase in terrorism-related deaths over the past year, totaling 1,081 fatalities.
As Pakistan continues its determined struggle against terrorism, the sacrifices of its security forces remain a cornerstone in the fight for peace and stability.
