Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan seeking permission to meet with incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
On Wednesday, Gandapur, accompanied by senior lawyer and PTI ally Latif Khosa, appeared before Justice Mansoor Ali Shah to request judicial intervention in facilitating the meeting. However, the court made it clear that the matter was outside its jurisdiction.
Advocate Khosa appealed to the bench by saying, “We want your blessings. You may refer the matter to the Chief Justice.” To this, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah responded:
“You’ve knocked on the wrong door. Please approach Chief Justice Yahya Afridi or the Registrar’s office.”
Justice Mansoor further clarified that the Chief Justice, being the Chairman of the Supreme Court’s Practice and Procedure Committee, is the appropriate authority to decide on such administrative matters.
“We cannot intervene on the judicial side in this matter,” he added.
Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Ali Amin Gandapur expressed frustration, saying,
“Despite repeated formal requests, our meeting with Imran Khan has not been arranged. It seems a conspiracy is being hatched against us. What are they afraid of?”
The PTI has long complained about restrictions placed on Imran Khan's communication and limited access granted to party leaders and legal counsel since his incarceration. The party maintains that political and legal rights are being suppressed.
This latest development comes amid rising political tension, with PTI pushing for broader access to its founder as it continues internal reorganization and legal challenges against state actions post-May 9 crackdown.
If permission is granted, it would mark the first meeting between the PTI founder and the sitting KP Chief Minister since the latter assumed office.
